Supporting Independence After Amputation
Occupational Therapy (OT) plays a vital role in rehabilitation following limb loss. At the London Prosthetics Centre, our specialist occupational therapists support amputees to regain independence, confidence, and the ability to participate fully in everyday life.
We can assess and support you either at our clinic, in your own home, or in community settings such as workplaces or public environments. This flexible approach ensures therapy is practical, relevant, and tailored to your real-world needs.
Our occupational therapists support clients with both practical skills and emotional adjustment, including:
-
Personal care and daily living skills
Learning new techniques for washing, dressing, toileting, and self-care following limb loss. -
Equipment and seating advice
Guidance on wheelchairs, specialist seating, and other adaptive equipment to improve comfort and safety. -
Home adaptations and accessibility
Advice on home modifications such as rails, ramps, bathroom adaptations, and kitchen access. -
Returning to work, education, and hobbies
Support with workplace adaptations, vocational planning, and re-engaging in meaningful activities. -
Driving and vehicle adaptations
Advice on adapted vehicles, driving assessments, and returning to independent travel. -
Using public transport and community facilities
Building skills and confidence to access shops, cinemas, gyms, and other public spaces. -
Confidence and independence building
Supporting emotional adjustment, problem-solving, and independence in daily routines.

Occupational Therapists are an essential part of the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team. We can work on shared rehabilitation goals in a holistic way to ensure patients return to meaningful occupations outside the clinic and, crucially, in their own homes, communities and environments.
