Carl Cato
Senior Prosthetist
At the London Prosthetics Centre (LPC), Senior Prosthetist Carl Cato brings over two decades of experience, combining technical expertise with a deeply personal commitment to patient outcomes.
Carl graduated with a BSc in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the University of Salford in 2006. Since then, he has worked across multiple services, developing a broad range of clinical skills and a clear understanding of the role collaborative care plays in successful rehabilitation. His experience spans both upper and lower limb prosthetics, with a particular focus on emerging and complex areas of practice.

A Patient-Centred Approach to Prosthetic Rehabilitation
This focus on outcomes is central to Carl’s approach. Before entering prosthetics, he worked as a dental technician. A role he enjoyed but ultimately found limiting in one significant way. Carl said, “I always felt that I wanted more interaction with the end user. Instead of simply creating a prosthetic device and being unable to witness its impact on a person's life, I wanted to see the results firsthand. That is why I was drawn to prosthetics.”
That desire to see the real-world impact of his work continues to shape how he practices today. At LPC, Carl is part of a highly collaborative, patient-focused team, where each case is approached with careful planning and shared expertise.
What to Expect Working with Carl
For both patients and referrers, understanding what the rehabilitation journey looks like can be one of the biggest challenges. Carl places particular emphasis on clarity from the very beginning. He says, “In my experience, it is common for clients to have limited or inaccurate information about the amputee rehabilitation pathway, so I understand how important it is to map out the first year of rehabilitation right from the initial assessment."
By doing so, Carl helps clients and their wider support teams understand what to expect, what is required, and how progress will be measured. While every journey is different, this early structure provides reassurance and direction, both key factors in building confidence and engagement.
This collaborative mindset extends beyond the clinic. Carl works closely with case managers, legal teams, and therapy providers, recognising the importance of clear communication and well-supported clinical recommendations.
His approach is grounded in detailed clinical assessment, considering medical, physical, and social factors to inform each prescription. Combined with an in-depth knowledge of available prosthetic components, this ensures recommendations are both appropriate and tailored to the individual.
Ultimately, his goal is simple, but powerful: “My goal is always to design a prosthesis that works for the patient, and that patient only.”
