For individuals adjusting to life after limb loss, the right prosthetist can shape not only their rehabilitation, but their confidence in what comes next. At the London Prosthetics Centre (LPC), Senior Prosthetist Carl Cato brings over two decades of experience, combining technical expertise with a deeply personal commitment to patient outcomes.

Meet Senior Prosthetist, Carl Cato

Carl graduated with a BSc in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the University of Salford in 2006. Since then, he has worked across multiple services, developing a broad range of clinical skills and a clear understanding of the role collaborative care plays in successful rehabilitation. His experience spans both upper and lower limb prosthetics, with a particular focus on emerging and complex areas of practice.

“I have developed a special interest in osseointegration and upper limb prosthetics over a long period, and I’m excited about the way technology is evolving in these areas, leading to much improved functional outcomes for the user.”

This focus on outcomes is central to Carl’s approach. Before entering prosthetics, he worked as a dental technician. A role he enjoyed but ultimately found limiting in one significant way. Carl said, “I always felt that I wanted more interaction with the end user. Instead of simply creating a prosthetic device and being unable to witness its impact on a person's life, I wanted to see the results firsthand. That is why I was drawn to prosthetics.”

A Patient-Centred Approach to Prosthetic Rehabilitation

That desire to see the real-world impact of his work continues to shape how he practices today. At LPC, Carl is part of a highly collaborative, patient-focused team, where each case is approached with careful planning and shared expertise.

A typical week reflects this approach. From virtual and face-to-face initial assessments and in-depth fitting appointments, to close collaboration with technicians and on-site therapy partners to keep rehabilitation plans on track. Alongside clinical work, Carl also prepares detailed reports for case managers and solicitors, supporting informed decision-making at every stage.

“The LPC team has a real patient-centred approach. We tailor a patient's treatment plan to meet their needs, and everyone goes above and beyond to make it happen successfully.”

What to Expect from the Prosthetic Rehabilitation Journey

For both patients and referrers, understanding what the rehabilitation journey looks like can be one of the biggest challenges. Carl places particular emphasis on clarity from the very beginning. He says, “In my experience, it is common for clients to have limited or inaccurate information about the amputee rehabilitation pathway, so I understand how important it is to map out the first year of rehabilitation right from the initial assessment."

By doing so, Carl helps clients and their wider support teams understand what to expect, what is required, and how progress will be measured. While every journey is different, this early structure provides reassurance and direction, both key factors in building confidence and engagement.

Equally important is ensuring that patients are actively involved throughout the process. “I believe that including the patient at all stages of the process when providing prosthetic rehabilitation is always crucial for successful outcomes,” Carl explains.

Clear Communication for Case Managers, Insurers and Legal Professionals

This collaborative mindset extends beyond the clinic. Carl works closely with case managers, legal teams, and therapy providers, recognising the importance of clear communication and well-supported clinical recommendations.

His approach is grounded in detailed clinical assessment, considering medical, physical, and social factors to inform each prescription. Combined with an in-depth knowledge of available prosthetic components, this ensures recommendations are both appropriate and tailored to the individual.

“I will always support the provision of suitable advanced prosthetic technology when appropriate and will always make decisions based on the patients’ best interests to help them achieve their goals.”

Start Your Prosthetic Rehabilitation Journey with Confidence

Ultimately, his goal is simple, but powerful: “My goal is always to design a prosthesis that works for the patient, and that patient only.”

If you are looking to refer a client or begin your own prosthetic rehabilitation journey, the team at the London Prosthetics Centre is here to help every step of the way.
